• often highlight (potential) problems, inconsistencies, ambiguities, or missing information that I can't resolve myself
• help to avoid the introduction or perpetuation of errors (e.g. to verify that the meaning of the text has not inadvertently been changed in the editing process)
• may be requests for missing items, or simply notes to explain the reason(s) behind a specific change
